Add and register your VAT number on Peppol

Add your VAT number as a Peppol identifier: the correct format per country and the steps.

By registering your VAT identification number as an additional Peppol identifier, you increase your reach on the network. Many international organisations search by VAT number rather than Chamber of Commerce number. Adding it takes just a few minutes.

Why register your VAT number?

Your Chamber of Commerce number is the default identifier used when you register on Peppol as a Dutch organisation. But not everyone searches by Chamber of Commerce number. International suppliers and customers often do not know your Chamber of Commerce number and search by your VAT number instead.

By adding your VAT number as an extra Peppol identifier, you become discoverable on both numbers. This is especially relevant if you invoice internationally or receive invoices from foreign parties.

Add your VAT number: step by step
  1. Log in to platform.econnect.eu.
  2. Go to Organisations and select the organisation for which you want to register the VAT number.
  3. Click on Details.
  4. Add a new identifier and select the type VAT number (VAT).
  5. Enter your VAT identification number in the correct format (see below).
  6. Save the change.

After saving, your VAT number is automatically registered in the eConnect SMP. Other parties can then also find you on this number and send documents to you via Peppol.

The correct format per country

The VAT number must be entered including the country code, without spaces or separators. The schemeID differs per country.

Tip: not sure about your VAT number? Verify it through the VIES system of the European Commission. There you can check the validity of any EU VAT number.

Configure sending and receiving

After adding your VAT number, you can configure per identifier whether you want to send, receive, or both. You can find these toggles in your organisation details.

In practice, many organisations use the Chamber of Commerce number as the primary identifier for receiving and the VAT number as a supplement for discoverability. But you can also set it up the other way around, depending on your situation.

Sweden: VAT number and enskild firma

For Swedish organisations, the VAT number (momsregistreringsnummer) is always exactly 14 characters long: SE followed by the 10-digit organisation number or personnummer, followed by 01. Peppol BIS Billing 3.0 enforces this through rule SE-R-001.

For sole traders (enskild firma), no separate organisation number exists. In that case, the 10-digit personnummer serves as the basis. Example: with personnummer 8010070962, the Swedish VAT number is SE801007096201. Note that a personnummer is sensitive personal data; publishing it as a Peppol identifier makes it visible in the public Peppol Directory.

Belgian VAT number

For Belgian organisations, the VAT number (enterprise number, schemeID 0208) is the default identifier on Peppol. The format is "BE" followed by exactly 10 digits, without spaces or separators. Since 1 January 2026, B2B e-invoicing via Peppol is mandatory in Belgium, making a correct VAT registration essential.

Since 2025, the Crossroads Bank for Enterprises (KBO) has been issuing new enterprise numbers with prefix 1 (format BE1xxxxxxxxx). Alongside the existing numbers with prefix 0, this format is valid in Peppol BIS Billing 3.0.
